Tauranga Boys' College follows the general framework of the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC), which specifies eight learning areas: English, the Arts, Health and Physical Education, Languages, Mathematics and Statistics, Science, Social Sciences and Technology. The learning associated with each area is part of a broad, general education and lays a foundation for later specialisation. 

During a student’s progress through the College, his Academic Tutor and Form Teacher will talk to him about courses and advise him on his selection of subjects. It is important that parents with questions and/or feedback relating to courses and options consult with their son’s Academic Tutor in the first instance.

INTENSIVE ENGLISH SUPPORT PROGRAMME

International students have a range of English language skills, which are supported, developed and strengthened through our English programmes at all year levels. 

Intensive English is offered to students for whom English is not their first language. In the junior levels, students may choose this option alongside their core English class to develop and reinforce their English language skills and support other curriculum areas.

In the senior levels, we continue to offer supportive academic English classes at each of the three levels. These classes are designed to reflect what is being taught in the mainstream English classes, while also providing second language support.

STUDENT SUCCESS STORY

LEO BIE FULI 

Leo graduated from Tauranga Boys' College in 2023 with entry into Otago University to study Health Science. In 2025, at the age of 17, Leo has been accepted into Medicine and will train as a Doctor.
