Tauranga Boys' College is proud to celebrate and uphold the rich cultural diversity of our community. Through Kapa Haka, Ngā Manu Kōrero, Pasifika, and more, students are supported to connect with their heritage, express identity, and develop leadership. These programmes foster pride, belonging, and a strong sense of whanaungatanga.
KAPA HAKA
Kapa haka is a cornerstone of student life at Tauranga Boys’ College, offering a powerful platform to showcase talent and dedication. It is more than performance—it’s a journey of learning, discipline, and deepening understanding of pūrākau and Te Ao Māori. Our first kaupapa this year is the Super 8 Festival, where eight boys' schools will come together in a highly anticipated challenge. This builds momentum for the Mataatua Regionals, where our students will perform alongside Tauranga Girls’ College. The regionals are especially significant, as they serve as the qualifying event for Nationals.
‘E haka i te haka a Tāne-Rore, e tū te tū o Tāne-Rore.’
‘Stand with the strength and presence of Tāne-Rore, the god of haka.’
NGĀ MANU KŌRERO
Ngā Manu Kōrero, established in 1965, promotes fluency in both te reo Māori and English, encouraging Māori students to become confident, skilled speakers. The prestigious competition includes divisions such as the Pei Te Hurinui Jones and Te Rāwhiti Ihaka Contests, honouring influential Māori leaders. For students at Tauranga Boys’ College, Ngā Manu Kōrero is a valuable opportunity to build confidence, communicate with clarity, and connect with their audience. The regional competition is a vital step toward Nationals, where students represent their iwi, hapū, and whānau with pride, purpose, and distinction.
PASIFIKA
Pasifika Performance is a vibrant way for students to embrace and express their identity as proud Polynesian young men through cultural dance and performance. A wide range of Pasifika cultures are celebrated, with students wearing traditional clothing to represent the diversity of the Pacific nations. Key events include the Super 8 Cultural Festival, local fia fia nights with other Tauranga Moana schools, and the ever-popular Pasifika in the Bay Festival. The TBC Pasifika Performance Group's ultimate goal is to perform at Auckland’s Polyfest—a prestigious event they are working towards in the near future.
