CAREER INFORMATION

CAREER COMPETENCY ASSESSMENTS

If your student has no idea what they want to do after school, that really is not unusual. Our Career Competency Assessment for students in Years 12 and 13 is a platform overseen by Career EQ and TBC with three licensed practitioners. These assessments take time, requiring the student to be committed to doing a good job of the assessment independently, before meeting with one of our team.

If you would like to be considered for a Career EQ assessment, please email Tom Collin on [email protected].

GATEWAY / WORK EXPERIENCE

For many of our students, the most useful career decisions that they make will be based on actual experience. We are always looking for work experience and Gateway placements for our young men. Students must be 16 years before they can be considered for work experience or Gateway.

Work experience can be a one or two day placement, to give any industry a try. You do not have to be in a Gateway programme to do a short term work experience. We encourage young men to find their own work experience placements and in some cases we can find work experience for them. If you are interested in work experience please contact Tom Collin [email protected].

Longer term placements will be considered as Gateway programmes. Gateway is a nationwide, Government funded programme which provides both qualifications and work experience for students who are still at school. At TBC we have Gateway classes at Year 12 and Year 13 and the majority of our placements are completed within those classes. However, if any TBC students want to complete a Gateway course and are not in those classes please contact the Teacher-in-charge of Gateway - Michelle Stanley [email protected] or the Gateway Manager Maryann Grainger [email protected].

For more information about Gateway at Tauranga Boys’ please see our dedicated Career Website.

SECONDARY TERTIARY PROGRAMS (STP) AND TRADE ACADEMIES

Tauranga Boys’ College is fortunate to be part of two Trades Academies - the Bay of Plenty Futures Academy programme and the school based Primary ITO (PITO) programme. There are a number of different courses available under Futures Academy including building, automotive, engineering, barbering, hospitality and diving.  The PITO programme is specifically designed for agriculture and horticulture.

The majority of our students involved in Futures Academy will be part of our Level 2 (Year 12) STP subject option. The Trades Academy is currently not available to Year 11 students, and there are limited places at Year 13. The STP subject option takes three lines of a student’s time table at Year 12. One line for building garden sheds, one line for fabrication and one line in our classroom based career competency programme.

For more information about STP, see the Future Pathways Website or contact the Teacher-in-charge of Trades Academies, Brad Smith [email protected].

The PITO programme is run through classes at Years 11 and 12. Students will work towards the New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industry Skills (Level 2) programme over 2 years. Students who are interested should select Agriculture and Horticulture as a subject in Year 11 (11AGH). Students who have shown competency in this will be selected for the PITO2 class in Year 12 to complete the programme.

For more information about the PITO Trades Academy see the Future Pathways website or contact the Teacher-in-charge of Trades Academies, Brad Smith [email protected] or the Teacher-in-charge of Agriculture and Horticulture, Taylah Carter [email protected].
